Winter is difficult for many Vermonters, with some families being unable to feed themselves during these freezing months. The Green Mountain Union High School community worked together throughout the month of November to collect non-perishable food items for the Chester-Andover Family Center. Students in Flamstead Chapter designed the drive with hopes to collect 200 items, and succeeded! In total, over 300 food items were raised, and were delivered by students to the food shelf on December 6th, along with a handmade recipe book.
When asked why GMUHS decided to help with the food drive, NHS member Allie Kenney explained that, “it’s important to support our community and stay involved!” Many students expressed a similar sentiment, and all were elated when the items were tallied.
As students delivered items to the center, volunteers explained that every month at least 30 families come to collect food, and in total they serve over 100 families. Especially during these transitional months, food donations are greatly needed. Johnnie, a volunteer of 18 years, stated simply, “it allows the people that are in need of food to have more options, and have food.”
Students and staff alike hope to make the food drive an annual event, and will continue serving the community in other ways throughout the year.
