The Green Mountain Union High School high school soccer team started in late August and will continue into mid-October.
The girls varsity team started off the season with a loss against Fair Haven 1-9, but followed it up with a win against Leland and Gray 2-1. Three more losses followed against West Rutland, Brattleboro, and Otter Valley, but on the 19th of September, they won against the Springfield girls’ team 4-0. The team is coached by Mrs. Angela Hutchins and Mrs. Carolynn Hamilton, and team captains are Abbigale Williams (#21) and Grace Wright (#2). Both captains are seniors, as well as Gracie Van Akin (#16). The goalies include Donnia Blagrove (#14) and Honoré Hayzen (#00). Donnia took a cleat to the knee in the Windsor game and got stitches, but should be back in the game by the end of the season. Gracie Van Akin was injured in the game against Fair Haven but was back in the game by the end of it. The girls team was runner ups in Invitationals, their tournament. On Wednesday, the 27th, the girls team lost against White River Valley 1-2. Their next game will take place Friday the 29th, against Sharon Academy, as a home game.
The boys varsity team’s season began with two losses against Twin Valley and Otter Valley with zero goals scored, tied with Rivendell Academy 3-3, lost against Brattleboro 1-5, but won against Leland and Gray 2-1 on the 22nd. The captains include Noah Cherubini (#16), Tanner Swisher (#3) and Austin Kubisek (#22). Tanner, being a junior, has distinguished himself on the field as a captain. The seniors are Noah Cherubini, Austin Kubisek, Forest Garvin (#00), Aiden LaBarge (#11), Tate Pellerin (#4), and Federico DeBartolo (#13).The boys team lost their Josh Cole tournament, losing their first game against, but tying their second. Most recently, on Wednesday the 27th, the boys team lost against Twin Valley 0-6. Their next game will be against Rivendell Academy, on Tuesday, October 3rd as an away game.
