GM Rock Climbing Team Has a Strong Start

by Arlo Schilling and Joa Gibson

After a strong 2022-2023 season, the Green Mountain rock climbing team found themselves state champions for the first time in over 15 years, and now the banner flies in the school cafeteria next to the climbing walls. Along with this victory came a flock of new climbers from grades six through ten. Now the team veterans and coaches have the responsibility of fostering a fresh group of dedicated climbers and, so far, the 2023-2024 season has had an excellent start. With a victory in the first comp against seven Vermont schools, the team showed this year's potential and willingness to strive for the win. On January 24th, the team had their second competition in Rutland and the results were a success. Kord Hinkley, Ian Bernier, and Joachim Gibson tied for the top climbs of the night, bringing in a score of 4900 each, with only one competitor reaching the same score. With the rest of the team climbing strong, the team had the potential of bringing themselves back into the first of High School Vermont rankings after dropping down to second. However, because of the absence of one of the top climbers, Hayden Alon, the team remained in second. With him back in the future competitions, the team has a chance of seizing and holding the position of first for the rest of the season. The top five teams go to the state championship, and both coaches and climbers are confident in making it there. The entire team's improvement is evidence of dedication and enjoyment of the sport. Though it will all be decided in the final comp, the team's condition this month signifies future success, reflecting the drive and ambition necessary for victory.

The team meets 3 times a week and has members of all ages! They are always looking for new members. If you are interested in joining, contact Allan Garvin GM FAC or Dylan Bate GM FAC
