A Conversation with Kate Leathe

By Kira Bate

Green Mountain welcomes another new staff member into admission this year: Kate Leathe. When asked how she’s adjusting to Green Mountain, Leathe said: “I love it here.” She can see how invested everyone is in the success of the school and their peers. She goes on to express how nice it is to be in a small community. Ms. Leathe graduated in a class of 465 students, which is more than the entire student body at GM.

Kate Leathe grew up in Altamont, New York, as an only child. She lived right next door to her grandparents and grew up in a tight-knit family. Her parents both worked in scientific fields and so she went to college at UVM to major in biology to become a veterinarian. She wanted to go out west and work on a ranch. However, while at college, she realized she most enjoyed her English classes. Ms. Leathe ended up becoming an English tutor for science majors who struggled with writing. This introduced her to her love for teaching, and she became an English teacher at Fairhaven. She played many different roles at Fairhaven including dean (proficiency-based learning coach), 504 coordinator, and steering committee. While she was in the Steering Committee she worked closely with the Vice Principal of Fairhaven. He retired shortly after and recommended her for the position. As Vice Principal, she likes that every day is different and that she can interact with everyone, rather than specific students. She has been working on building connections with staff and students to be the best leader she can be. Recently, she and Mr. Broadley have been working together to ensure everyone can connect with an activity outside of academics. She hopes to make sure Green Mountain is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
